The first time I had a Sunset Cocktail was in sunny Southern California. I thought it was so pretty, and the flavor was absolutely delicious.

This is one of my favorite cocktails to make on a Friday night. If I sit back, relax, and have a sip, I can almost envision the sound of the waves from the ocean.

Ingredient Notes

  • Orange juice. Fresh squeezed will give you the best flavor, but there’s nothing wrong with pouring it out of the carton, either.
  • Pineapple juice. This adds a touch of tropical flavor.
  • Grenadine. This adds the color for the sunset gradient and also sweetens the drink. You could also use pomegranate juice or cranberry juice.
  • Rum. Malibu rum is a Carribean rum that has a lovely coconut flavor. I’ve made it with regular white and golden rum, and the flavor isn’t the same.
  • Garnish. I think the garnishes make this drink. I like to use maraschino cherries and an orange wedge.

Step 4: Pour the grenadine into the center of the mixture – it will sink to the bottom, creating the sunset layers. I poured it over the back of the spoon for it to gently go down and also just poured it straight in and they both looked the same. 🙂

Step 5: Garnish with maraschino cherries on a cocktail pick and a slice of orange and enjoy!

Tips

  • For the best flavor, use freshly squeezed juice rather than store-bought.
  • For extra flavor, rim the edge of the glass with sugar before pouring in the cocktail.
  • Stir gently to prevent overmixing, which can cause the layers to blend together and disrupt the beautiful sunset effect.
  • Enjoy responsibly, and never drink and drive.
