Ingredient Notes + Substitutions

You’ll only need a few easy-to-find ingredients:

  • Tequila – A frozen margarita starts with good tequila. Blanco (silver tequila) has a clean, crisp taste that plays well with citrus. I use 1800 Blanco tequila in most of my margarita recipes.
  • Triple Sec – A sweet, orange-forward liqueur that adds warmth and brightness. Swap with Cointreau or Grand Marnier if you prefer more depth. Even a splash of orange juice works in a pinch.
  • Lime Juice – Fresh is always better. Squeeze real fresh limes for the best flavor.
  • Simple Syrup – Homemade or store-bought is fine. You can use agave syrup, honey, or a sugar-free alternative if you want a “skinny margarita.”
  • Ice Cubes – Lots of ice is what gives this drink its signature slushy consistency.
  • Salt for the Rim – Coarse salt, kosher salt, pink Himalayan salt – whatever you love. A 50/50 salt and sugar rim is also delicious.

How To Make a Frozen Margarita

Salt the Rim. Run a lime wedge around the rim of your favorite margarita glasses.
Dip them in a shallow plate of salt. Set aside.

Add Everything to the Blender. Into your blender, add: Tequila, Triple sec, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, and ice cubes.

Blend Until Slushy. Blend on high until the mixture looks smooth and icy. A strong blender (like a Vitamix) gives you the creamiest, most consistent texture.

Taste and Adjust. Need more sweetness? Add a splash of syrup. Want more tang? Squeeze in extra lime. Feeling bold? Add a little more tequila.

Pour and Serve. Pour into your salt-rimmed glasses, garnish with lime wedges, and serve immediately.

Expert Tips

  • For thicker margaritas, add more ice; for thinner ones, use less.
  • A high-speed blender makes a huge difference in texture.
  • Freeze your glasses ahead of time for extra frosty results.
  • Taste after blending: fresh limes can vary in tartness.
  • Add a small handful of frozen pineapple for a fun flavor twist.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, swap tequila and triple sec for soda water and extra lime.

Frozen Margarita FAQs

Can I make this ahead of time?

Not ideal. Frozen margaritas melt quickly. They’re best made right before serving.

Can I use a different spirit?

You can try rum or vodka, but it won’t be a traditional margarita.

What if I don’t have a blender?

Use a food processor. Or shake everything with lots of crushed ice and strain (it won’t be slushy but still tastes great).

Can I make it non-alcoholic?

Absolutely! Just replace the tequila and Triple Sec with lime juice, soda water, or a non-alcoholic spirit.

Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients

  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 2 ounces tequila
  • 1 ounce Triple Sec
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 2 ounces simple syrup *see note below
  • coarse salt for rimming the glass
  • lime wedges for garnish optional

Instructions

  • Rim your favorite cocktail glass with salt (if desired). To do this, take a lime wedge and run it around the rim of the glass. Then, dip the rim of the glass in a plate of salt to coat it.
  • Add 2 cups of ice cubes, 2 ounces of tequila, 1 ounce of lime juice, 2 ounces of Triple Sec, and 2 ounces of simple syrup to a blender.
  • Blend on high speed until smooth and slushy.
  • Pour the mixture into a salt-rimmed glass.
  • Garnish with a lime wedge and serve immediately.

Notes

*Simple Syrup: You can easily make simple syrup at home by combining 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of sugar in a saucepan, heating the mixture until it dissolves, and then letting it cool. Store any extra syrup in a glass jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. If you plan on mixing lots of drinks, double or triple the amounts.
  • If you want to make a large batch, double or triple the ingredients and blend them in batches in the blender.
  • Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor.
  • Taste the margarita as you go along, and add more simple syrup if you want it sweeter or more lime juice if you want it more sour.
  • Use enough ice to make it thick and slushy, but not so much that it becomes too thick to drink. If you want your drink to be less thick, use less ice.
