Ingredients and Substitutions

Ingredients for the Moscow Mule with rum placed on a wooden table.
  • Rum. I used Bacardi white superior rum. Substitute with vodka for a traditional Moscow Mule or bourbon for a Kentucky Mule.
  • Ginger beer. I used Crabbies’s brand ginger beer, but feel free to use your favorite. You can even use ginger ale for a milder ginger flavor and less of a kick if you like.
  • Lime juice. Fresh is best, but bottled can be used if that’s all you have. You can replace it with lemon juice for a slightly different citrus flavor.

Tips

  • Use high-quality rum for the best flavor.
  • Fresh-squeezed lime juice will also give you the best flavor.
  • Gently stir the ingredients as over-mixing can flatten the ginger beer.
  • Use a copper mug to keep the drink cold.

Additions and Variations

  • Add fresh herbs like mint, basil, or rosemary.
  • Include a slice of jalapeno pepper for a spicier version.
  • Use dark rum for a richer flavor.

FAQs about Moscow Mule with Rum

Omit the rum and use a non-alcoholic ginger beer like Fever Tree.

It’s best served fresh due to the carbonation of the ginger beer, but you can mix the rum and lime juice ahead of time.

Light rum is more subtle and mixes well without overpowering other flavors. Gold rum adds a richer taste, while dark rum offers the deepest flavor.
