Perfect for Halloween parties, this creepy twist on the classic Shirley Temple involves squirting “blood” into your drink with a syringe. Perfect for Halloween parties or any time you want some fun drinks!

What is a Shirley Temple Drink?

A Shirley Temple drink is a non-alcoholic beverage named after the famous child actress Shirley Temple Black. Legend has it this mocktail was created for her to enjoy while dining with the Hollywood elite.

The classic Shirley Temple drink is a combination of ginger ale, grenadine syrup, and a maraschino cherry. It is a fizzy, sweet, and classy drink I used to order as a kid if it was a special occasion. I always got either a Shirley Temple or a Roy Rogers.

Ingredients for Bloody Shirley Temple Drink

This sweet drink combines only two ingredients (or three if you include ice cubes).

  • Lemon lime soda. Use either Sprite or 7-UP. You can even use ginger ale or club soda.
  • Grenadine. To get the brilliant red color, i.e., the illusion of blood in the syringe, Grenadine syrup is used.
  • Ice cubes. These will help keep the drink cold.

Supplies

To make this recipe, you will need plastic syringes. I prefer the 10 mL size. You can find them at Amazon or your local grocery store or drugstore. Or you can ask your local pharmacist like I did!

I used glass jars, but you can use fun Halloween-themed glasses!

How to make the bloody Shirley Temple drink

Step 1: Fill a glass or jar half-full with ice cubes.

Step 2: Pour the soda over the ice cubes, leaving about an inch of space at the top.

Step 3: Fill a food-safe plastic syringe with grenadine syrup. Place the syringe in the glass, letting your guests inject their own “blood” into the drink.

Optional: If you don’t have a syringe, slowly drizzle grenadine over the back of a spoon, letting it trickle down the inside of the glass. The grenadine will sink to the bottom to give it an eerie look.

Step 4: Inject a tiny bit of syrup into the bottom of the glass. Serve immediately to your guests and let them inject the rest of the “blood” into the drink if they wish!

Tip: Garnish the top of each glass with maraschino cherries, gummy eyeballs, or gummy worms.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make it in advance?

Yes! Pre-fill the syringes with grenadine and have your soda chilled. Assemble right before serving to maintain fizziness.

What can I use instead of grenadine?

You could use pomegranate juice, pomegranate syrup, strawberry syrup, or raspberry syrup.

Can I make it an adult drink?

Of course! Add a shot of vodka, rum, or tequila to turn the mocktail into an adult cocktail.
